Jazz in Film Scores: From Noir to Contemporary Cinema
One of the defining characteristics of Stanley Kubrick’s directing style is his masterful use of film music. Many of the iconic moments in Kubrick’s best movies are guided and propelled by strong, nuanced and unexpected music choices. Emotional resonance is often what makes a movie linger in our minds. Films that evoke strong emotions, whether laughter, tears, fear, or inspiration, tend to stay with us the longest.
I decided to include two activities that related to the premise of the show. Last week, I hosted a screening for my web series The Roommate Contract and here are three simple low-cost things I did to make it more interesting for my audience. The iconic ending has George Taylor stumbling upon the Statue of Liberty, revealing to the audience that the seemingly alien planet is actually Earth after a nuclear war. After a mysterious mist blankets their town, a family decides to stay in a supermarket until it passes by. Unbeknownst to them, the mist is home to terrifying creatures that slowly encroach on the supermarket, threatening everyone’s survival. Directed by Oscar-winner Christopher Nolan, Inception is one of his most iconic works, with its mind-bending story and visuals paired with a stellar cast.
These elements come together to create cinematic experiences that linger in our minds and hearts, making films unforgettable. So, the next time you watch a movie that leaves a lasting impression, take a moment to appreciate the artistry and craftsmanship that made it possible. Stay tuned for more insights into the world of cinema and the elements that make movies truly unforgettable.
It’s hard to pin down exactly but in this video I’ll break down some factors which I feel contribute to movies being regarded as ‘great’. I do, however, encourage you to prepare some tissues if you tend to be emotional, because this movie will really make you cry at certain points. Julia receives a surprise flower delivery, sent anonymously by Tessa to make it look like Julia is having an affair. While Julia is at the door, Tessa sneaks in and steals David’s watch, his grandmother’s wedding ring, and a pair of Julia’s panties. That afternoon, while Julia and Lily go to a farmer’s market to see David’s brewery booth, Lily wanders off.
When Michael finally shows up at her house (which Tessa has masterminded, of course), he again beats her horribly, slamming her face into a cabinet which instantly bruises and slices it. He also pulls her hair back harshly to hold her head in place while he menaces her. “Unforgettable” is mangled with glaring flaws and plot holes, to the point that it barely offers enough continuity to allow a legitimate criticism about its story. While Director Denise De Novi had the opportunity to create a valuable narrative about abuse in relationships, Unforgettable misses the mark for empathy and falls flat. The flashbacks Julia, Portrayed by Rosario Dawson, was about her abusive past are vividly realistic and frightening, which is confusing paired with its inapt script. Tessa’s plan to deal with this is by reintroducing Julia’s ex-boyfriend and violent abuser back into her life. Tessa hopes that it will drive Julia and her ex-husband to break up, letting Tessa slide into Julia’s place. Although the description of the film depicts a juicy scandal, the rest of the movie fails to follow through and create a believable and investing story.
The soft hum of the projector, the hushed anticipation of the audience, and that larger-than-life screen—it’s a setting we’re all familiar with. Within moments, we’re transported into a different world, connecting with characters, settings, and narratives that remain with us long after the credits roll. For most people, the most widely accepted definition of “independent film” is any sort of movie made outside (or largely outside) the studio system. With Undercover Indies we hope to shine a light on some familiar film titles that you may be surprised to learn are actually—surprise! The personal connections we make with these soundtracks go beyond the cinema.
But these artworks aren’t just preparatory steps or mere drawings; they’re blueprints, the very foundation upon which the tangible prop will be built. This Ava DuVernay-directed drama follows a historic Alabama voting rights campaign in the lead-up to the Voting Rights Act of 1965. The fifty-mile march from Selma to Alabama was organized by Civil Rights Leaders in response to the denial of basic voting rights to Black Americans living in the southern United States. After he ascends to the throne, the King faces a pivotal moment in his life and the life of his nation.

The audience I saw the film with was certainly “oooh”-ing it up each time one woman landed a fierce attack on the other, like it was particularly high-stakes pro wrestling match. For much of the movie, Julie is afraid to tell David the story of what happened between her and Michael, at times lying about it. Julia asks her coworker and friend Ali to help her get some information on Tessa. Ali says that sometimes it’s good to have a former convicted hacker on staff. Eventually, Julia learns dark details of Tessa’s past as well.

We hope this article was helpful in getting you thinking a little deeper about music choices for your projects. Music aside, there are many ways in which you can make your scenes more impactful. In this video, we cover his many aspects that make him one of the greatest film directors but pay attention to the concluding section on music. In particular, how two sequences in A Clockwork Orange remind us just how powerful our associations with music are. Music can either complement the action to enforce the drama of the scene, or it can stand in stark contrast to the action to create a twisted commentary. Ever wonder why the best movies of all time are the best movies of all time?
While there are many films made for less, considering the scope of what was achieved on set, a much bigger budget could have been anticipated. Speaking of Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet, the cast alone is likely to make you think that this is big budget film. And while a few of these massively talented actors were not quite yet to the manga quiz level of full superstardom, they would all get there within a matter of a few years.
